This was fun! My friend Udo Pannekeet, who is an incredible bass player, invited me to add some trumpets to this new composition he wrote for his upcoming solo album. I was glad I checked Udo’s parts one day before tracking down the trumpets in his beautiful studio. Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the chords and notes, including a triple high G-sharp. As far as I remember, I recorded that note only one time earlier (by accident!) on one of Candy’s albums. I promised Udo to give it a try, and it worked! So we tracked al the trumpet parts, followed by a flugelhorn solo, and by the time I left the studio I was completely worn out but satisfied and thankful for the fun we had.
Without any exception I find it an honor to be invited by friends to join their projects, just as much as I try to encourage fellow musicians to record their own ideas as frequently as possible. Life is short, and to me a personal musical outing means 10 times more than just an opinion about music. Or in the words of an English friend: Talking about music is like singing about football.
