I had to write something about Beef, because without Beef the Special Request Horns would not exist. Beef gained an immense popularity on festivals nation wide, and they were looking for a horn section to have some extra live power for their Pinkpop performance in 2001. They asked saxophonist Guido Nijs to find some horns, and this is how it all started! Singer Pieter Both named us the Special Request Horns, and we kept using that name ever since.
The many concerts between 2000-2005 formed a strong basis for the sound of our horn section, and it was great fun to be on the road with all the lovely characters of this power-reggae band. I am not a smoker, but for non-smokers there used to be plenty tequila available on stage. Another funny fact was: No matter how bad the weather was, the sun always started to shine as soon as Beef started their performance. And the club shows were long… I even do remember a show where the encore was even 2 times longer than the actual show. It was a treat to play with such a rock-solid rhythm section and I still enjoy to hang out with some of the creative minds of the bands like Koenfu Lommerse and Pieter Both.
